The Series guerrilla theatrics

You might run into some people comfortably exhibiting strange behavior. If they’re not your friends, they might be “The Original Zorthians,” a guerrilla theater production happening around and among guests of The 2nd New Los Angeles Folk Festival featuring Nicole Disson, Mecca v.a., and D’Arcy F-M, and many more we shan’t unmask. It’s brought to us by The Series, an experiment in theater as a party where scenes, songs, and other performances break out among us suddenly, sometimes obviously, sometimes we can’t be sure but we think we’re seeing something… It’s a great concept that Nicole Disson has established over the year at The Standard Downtown rooftop. We invited The Series to try out Zorthian Ranch as a stage. We asked Mecca if she would pretty please do a dance. They brought Darcy on board and about twenty more mystery folks…

about The Series:

THE SERIES pairs top and emerging talent in the fields of contemporary dance, sound art, music, playwriting, poetry, theater and other performance and art disciplines—most of whom haven’t worked together previously—to collaborate on original pieces that are performed only once. These pieces are commissioned to be site-specific to the rooftop of The Standard, Downtown LA.   Producer and performer Nicole Disson has curated eight original SERIES’ to date, starting in August 2010.  Inspired by rule-breaking productions of surrealist theater and experimental immersive modern dance, THE SERIES is part show and part event, and continually moves around the Standard’s rooftop terrace, and among the hotel’s patrons, blurring the line between audience and performer.  Foam magazine and L.A. Record are the event’s media partners, both of which have featured THE SERIES, along with L.A. WEEKLY, Details magazine, and the website Danceplug, with mentions in LA’s Brand X, Flavorpill, and For Your Art.
